As part of The Edge Electric Xmas Concert Series, The Mod Club was host to three bands that were well suited to play the same night: The Flatliners, Hostage Life, and Ill Scarlett. It was an all ages show and my guess was that about half of the crowd was underage. There were two areas reserved for alcohol consumption, with the main area open to all ages, but with Ill Scarlett headlining, it may be no surprise to learn that no matter which area you were in, there was the permeating smell of one illicit substance eminating from the crowd. read more (535 words)

Trole is a hard working, hard playing four piece band from near London, Ontario that have apparently played over 700 shows since forming in 2000. Some unique aspects to their show are the way Jefferson plays and handles his upright bass and the fact they pump out their style of rockabilly with punk attitude and energy. read more (77 words)

More Content Coming Soon!

14-Dec-2006 09:51 PM Contributed by: pete Music News
I realize there's been a short break in the content, but there are more photos and reviews coming soon. Sadly, instead of spending time doing photography and reviews, I've been moving petenema.com to a new hosting company to handle the recent increase in traffic. We're running on the new hosting service now, and it seems to be working fine. Please let me know if you notice any problems. Coming soon:
  • Concert Photos: Trole
  • Concert Photos: Hostage Life and Ill Scarlett
  • The FIRST edition of Quick Shots - Four short CD reviews.

Pete's Pick: Drew Danburry

05-Dec-2006 04:49 AM Contributed by: pete Pete's Picks
I first heard Drew Danburry on a Magnet Sampler CD and his song It Ends With Red, Violet And Orange really stood out. It's from his 12 song album entitled Besides: Are We Just Playing Around Out Here Or Do We Mean What We Say. To me, it's the best song on the CD, but there's a likeably raw indie sound through the entire album. I picked it up from eMusic.com (You can too and get 25 free downloads, click one of the banners on my page). In the meantime, check him out on MySpace.

Danny Michel is a Canadian singer / songwriter with seven albums to his credit that span the years from 1997 to present. On top of that, he was nominated for a Juno award in 2004 for his album Tales Of The Invisible Man. Based on the number of guests musicians he brought onto the stage at The Mod Club on November 30th, he appears to not only be well known in the Canadian music industry, but also well liked by many Canadian musicians. I'm guessing his easy-going and amiable disposition is not just for the stage, and could be the reason for his well positioned career. read more (533 words)

Jet

The Guvernment had originally booked Jet for back on October 1st, but the show had to be delayed due to illness. So Jet recheduled for November 26th, and on that Sunday night, they were there just as promised. Early in the show Nic Cester assured us that they were all in good health, and emphasized the point by belting out his trademark screech. He thanked the fans for being patient, but I think the anticipation of the rescheduled date may have actually added to the excitement in the crowd. Jet is all about big rock 'n' roll, like great bands of the past (yes, sometimes they even sound like some of those great bands... get over it) and their performance was a high powered, adrenaline inducing, stadium-sized rock show that just happened to take place in a relatively small venue. read more (489 words)

Cat Power

Several times I have tried to get into Cat Power (a.k.a. Chan Marshall) due to strong word of mouth and solid indie chops, but aside from some unconventional cover songs and a cameo on last year’s Handsome Boy Modeling School album, very little has stuck with me. Hoping her reputation as a live performer would convince me, I went to her latest Toronto show at the Phoenix with optimistic curiosity. read more (269 words)

The 2006 CASBY Music Awards show was hosted by 102.1 The Edge and Molson Canadian and with this offering of eight great bands performing their top nominated songs it would've been a difficult evening to pass up. (CASBY stands for “Canadian Artists Selected By You”). Radio personalities were omnipresent, and the beautiful Molson Canadian girls were there helping to advertise the one and only beer available at the bar by handing out a ticket for a free one just for posing with them in a picture. The eight bands performed in this order: Mobile, Ill Scarlet, Neverending White Lights, Hostage Life, Champion, Evans Blue, Sam Roberts, and K-OS. The show was very well organized, and went off with only one very noticeable but non-fatal problem (details later). It was hosted by Dean Blundell and the morning crew as well as the other DJs from 102.1 The Edge, including my two favourites: Josie Dye and Barry Taylor. read more (1,403 words)

Welcome to a new section of PETE NEMA simply called Concert Photos. This section will highlight just the photos of artists without all those lengthy and annoying sentences from me that describe their performance (sometimes known as "a review"). Instead, I'll just start with a few short sentences and then, WHAM!, straight to the photos. And so, here is the first entry of this new section. read more (163 words)
