Enema Rating: (9/10)
Their name might make you think of a blender you'd expect to see promoted on a late night infomercial. In actual fact, Centro-matic is a band that has been vigorously churning out new content since they were formed back in 1995. But their output is far better than the average blend. read more (458 words)

NXNE: Television

The Phoenix Concert Theatre

New York City proto-punk legends Television played to a packed Phoenix Concert Hall on Friday night in what should be remembered as one the biggest coups in the NXNE Festivalís twelve year history. Television last played Toronto in 1992 when they toured in support of their third and last studio release, the eponymous Television. Since then, the CBGB icons play only a handful of sporadic gigs each year - so this one-off was exciting on many levels. read more (354 words)

You can't fault a band for playing a short set when they're jammed in between two other acts and on a strict schedule as part of the NXNE (NorthByNortheast) music festival in Toronto. What you can do is think about how well they used the time to make an impact on an unsuspecting concert goer. On the first night of NXNE at The Horseshoe Tavern, Victoria BC based Jets Overhead did more than a mere flyby.

Every Tuesday at The Horseshoe is Nu Music Night and when I noticed Bend Sinister (Pete's Pick on May 20th), a band based out of Vancouver, were playing there this Tuesday it seemed like a good opportunity to see them live. Pride Tiger was scheduled to come on before Bend Sinister, a band I'd never heard of before. I didn't plan it, but I ended up getting there early enough to catch Pride Tiger's entire set which was a bit of a shock, in a good way. read more (459 words)

Pete's Pick: Rogue Wave

03-Jun-2006 05:25 pm Contributed by: pete Pete's Picks
The song you should begin with is Bird On A Wire from Descended Like Vultures, but the track that really has me hooked is California, a song that almost immediately reminded me of Going To California by Led Zeppelin, and it's not just the title (but I'll admit it is the title, a little bit). This CD by Rogue Wave is filled with great tunes.

NorthByNotheast, Toronto In June

01-Jun-2006 07:39 pm Contributed by: pete Music News
I'm examining my calendar and realizing that there is far, far too many great bands passing through Toronto in June. Normally this would be a good thing, but I have limited time in my schedule to get out, see these bands, and write reviews. Part of the reason for this heavy weather is the NorthByNotheast festival that runs June 8 - 10 when 400 bands will descend on Toronto and play 33 clubs over 3 nights. It's going to be amazing. read more (401 words)

Pete's Pick: People In Planes

27-May-2006 05:38 pm Contributed by: pete Pete's Picks
People In Planes will be playing with Pilate at the Koolhaus in Toronto on June 29th. I'm hoping to get in, take some photos, and write a review. I hear they're great in concert, so try to get out and see them in Toronto or any other stop on their tour. Check their schedule on MySpace. In the meantime, have a listen to Fire, which is my favorite from As Far As The Eye Can See...

AC/DShe - Photos from JavaOne 2006 in San Francisco

AC/DShe is an all-girl tribute band to AC/DC, so a review isn't really appropriate. But since I happened to be down at JavaOne last week and AC/DShe was on stage during the Thursday night party, I decided to snap a few photos. They put on a great tribute band-style show, and they were, uh... an appropriate selection for the male-dominated crowd at JavaOne. Enjoy the photos. read more (1 words)

Alternative Yin and Yang, A Night at the Rialto

Enema Rating: (8/10)

The Rialto Theatre in Tucson Arizona was built in the 1920ís and has had a wicked past indeed. Members of the Dillinger gang were captured in front of it when they were burned out of a bar across the street. Vaudeville, Stripers, and the Spanish Cinema were once housed within. But tonight it was all about entertainment with She Wants Revenge, OK Go, and The Year of Acceleration as they strummed up rock passion in the crowd of a packed house. OK Go and She Wants Revenge were like a meeting of the light and the dark, the yin and the yang. read more (591 words)

Pete's Pick: Bend Sinister

20-May-2006 05:41 pm Contributed by: pete Pete's Picks
Bend Sinister is a young, Canadian band from B.C. that reeks of 70's progressive rock, and pulls it off in a 00's kind of way. Reminds me of early Genesis mixed with The Mars Volta. Through The Broken City is (or will be) the title track off their recently (or soon to be) released CD. I wish they had more details on that release on their website.
