Gentlemen Husbands Release Four Song EP For Free Download

17-Sep-2009 11:15 PM Contributed by: pete Music News

The Gentlemen Husbands have recently released a four track EP for free download. They've been described as "the ultimate bearded bar band, but with more energy and teenage angst". I haven't been out to see them perform yet, but their blues-tinged indie rock sounds like it could be a good accompaniment to a Friday night. On first listen, best of the four is Plans B&E.

In my Best Of 2007 article, I included Young Galaxy in both my Top 10 Concerts and Top 10 Albums lists. It's now 2½ years since I first encountered the band, and I still listen to their 2007 self-titled album regularly. Although I haven't grown attached to their sophomore album, Invisible Republic, in the same way, keep in mind that I've only had it in my collection for about a week now. Like their first album, there are two or three songs that keep bringing me back for additional plays, but only time will tell if they grow on me in the same way as songs like Lazy Religion and Swing Your Heartache. Either way, I wanted to be there for their Toronto CD release party at The Drake Underground. Opening the night were Cancel Winter, who I sadly missed, and Treasure Hunt, a bit of an odd consortium of musicians. read more (448 words)

The night before I found myself at V-Fest for the weekend of August 29th-30th, I went out to the Horseshoe Tavern to help Still Life Still celebrate the release of their debug full-length CD Girls Come Too. Opening the night were two bands I've seen and enjoyed a few times over: The Paint Movement, and Dinosaur Bones. read more (453 words)

CONTEST: Jets Overhead Prize Pack

11-Sep-2009 03:00 PM Contributed by: pete Music News

Due to the recent air shows at the CNE, it wasn't long ago that my Twitter feed was filled with the phrase "jets overhead". Every time I read it, for a moment I thought it was someone talking about the band Jets Overhead. But no. However, if you missed the air show and wish you were able to say "jets overhead" more often, now is your chance. read more (127 words)

Virgin Festival '09 Ontario - Sunday (Photos and Reviews)

10-Sep-2009 04:00 AM Contributed by: pete Concert Reviews

The Sunday of V-Fest Ontario turned out to be a fairly cool day that turned into a cold evening, but you had to know that there was no way the weather was going to keep away the masses for the last Nine Inch Nails show in Canada. I arrived a little later than I did on Saturday, and given the fullness of the parking lot and bike count outside the gates, I was surprised to find the same level of sparseness to the crowd that I had seen the day before. Honestly, I had expected it to fill in early, but I guess with the designated seating, fans who bought tickets just to see NIN didn't think there was enough incentive to arrive early. They were wrong. read more (1,490 words)

Virgin Festival '09 Ontario - Saturday (Photos and Reviews)

04-Sep-2009 12:00 AM Contributed by: pete Concert Reviews

When Virgin Festival first announced it was moving to Orillia, basically requiring an overnight stay in the form of camping, I was disappointed since it was going to be the first year since the festival's inception that I wouldn't be attending. For the past three years, Virgin Festival has been a mixture of different kinds of good experiences: In 2006 I went as an attendee, in 2007 I had an excellent, but mostly irresponsible, time with an All-Access wristband, and in 2008 I finally attended as media for the first time, which resulted in having a great time and four articles worth of stuff (one, two, three, and four). So when I learned that V-Fest Ontario was being moved to Toronto, I jumped on it as quick as I could, and despite the threat of bad weather, was really happy I was going to be there again. read more (1,108 words)

Although Brendan Benson may more commonly be associated with Jack White and their band The Raconteurs, he has had a solo career since 1996, releasing four solo albums interspersed with his work with The Mood Elevator and The Raconteurs. His 2005 album, Alternative To Love, hit the charts in the U.K. and is the album that is responsible for making me a fan. read more (378 words)

Preparing for the release of their new album, 1up, scheduled for September 29th, illScarlett was in the studio recording a video for the first single Take It For Granted. The concept of the video was centered around throwing paint at the guys while filming it using a high-speed camera for (what turned out to be) slow motion paint-in-the-face action. It was hilarious to be there for the throw and then get to watch what was captured in slow motion afterwards, and I can't wait to see the finished product. In the meantime, check out these photos I captured during the making of the Take It For Granted video. read more (184 words)

Barrie-based Fox Jaws often plays in the Toronto area, and as a result I've managed to see them more than a couple of times just because they were playing on the same bill as bands I went out to see. However, the last two times I've seen them, the band has managed to get inside my brain, in a good way, with one of their new songs. With all the new material being released on their new album, At Odds, the CD release party seemed like a good event for me to head out with the sole intention of seeing Fox Jaws. read more (315 words)
