Wavelength is a weekly live music series that is run every Sunday night at Sneaky Dee's. It showcases independent bands (Broken Social Scene, The Constantines, Tokyo Police Club have all played Wavelength in the past), but in my experience, it also includes some of the more experimental acts you'll see. I went this past Sunday to see Deleted Scenes, a band from Washington D.C. that fits in the former category, but I got there in time to see Circus School, an act this fits firmly in the latter. read more (355 words)

It was really only by chance that I ended up at the Theory Of A Deadman concert. As I mentioned in my Sunday article about The Artist Sanctuary, I noticed one of the guys from Theory Of A Deadman was wearing a shirt from The Parlor Mob, and when I spoke to him about it, I learned that The Parlor Mob were going to be opening the show on the upcoming Thursday. I've been listening to The Parlor Mob album regularly and love it, and I like a few of the hits from Theory Of A Deadman, so we made some on-the-spot arrangements. read more (526 words)

Sometimes I wake up on Monday and wonder how I managed to get through the past few days without forgetting who I am. I was out on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday for NXNE, and then spent some of Saturday at The Artist Sanctuary. I had to leave early on Saturday, but for a good reason: I had to get to a friend's all-night party that was taking place out of the city. And then when I returned to Toronto Sunday morning, I was back at The Artist Sanctuary. Who am I, and how did my life get to be this fun? read more (443 words)

Although I had just spent three late nights out during NXNE, the MuchMusic Video Awards were coming up on Sunday night, and that meant getting to spend time at The Artist Sanctuary, an event that ran on both Saturday and Sunday. On the first day, I was only able to stay for a few hours, but during that time I saw live performances by Killer Green, Goodbye Beatdown, Samantha Schultz, and some freestyling from Shad. I also got to say hello to a number of people such as members of Billy Talent, Switchfoot, and Mobile, as well as people like Arisa Cox (from E!) and Ashley Leggat (from Life With Derek). There was an open bar with rooms setup by Sirius, New Balance/PF Flyers (such cool shoes), Nokia, Vitamin Water, Red Bull, Skull Candy, two rooms with spa-like facilities, and much more. read more (1 words)

NXNE '09 Friday Night (Photos and Reviews)

29-Jun-2009 03:30 AM Contributed by: pete Concert Reviews

As is almost always the case for me with festivals, I tend to be overly ambitious on the first night and then pare it back significantly for the next (and remaining) nights, and NXNE '09 was no exception. Despite my picks for Friday night, I decided to head to the El Mocambo to meet up with some friends and just stick there until late, at which point the plan was to move to Rancho Relaxo for a 3:00 AM set from Mark Berube and The Patriotic Few (he was excellent last time I saw him in January 2008). read more (611 words)

NXNE '09 Thursday Night - Pete's Adventures (Photos and Reviews)

Although I posted Pete's NXNE '09 Picks, I didn't intend that to be my schedule. But for Thursday, I ended up following my picks list fairly closely, with some help from another photographer Sara Collaton who offered to meet up with me at Zeus and provide transportation to the other shows. And so with Sara, the two of us traveled between The Courthouse, the Rivoli, Rancho Relaxo, The Drake, and Clinton's, where she dropped me off and went on her way. But that wasn't the end of the night for me. read more (1,316 words)

Before I climbed onto the White Cowbell Oklahoma mobile party bus and got lost in the fun that was NXNE, I went out on a Tuesday to The Horseshoe to catch Jets Overhead, but also to see what The Last True Gentlemen were up to, and hear The Evelyn Room for the first time. Tuesdays are always free at The Horseshoe, thanks to Bookie from 102.1, so it's always a good night to hang out and snap some photos. read more (549 words)

NXNE '09 kicked off with an Opening Party at The Berkeley Church, but the event of the night, the one that everyone was talking about the next day, was the Arts & Crafts opening night showcase at The Courthouse. The Special Guest turned out to be (fairly predictably) Broken Social Scene, but the unpredictable part was that Feist joined in the show. read more (256 words)

"When was the last time you saw a band like that?!?" was the question that was posed to me immediately after Inward Eye left the stage. My response? "They're amazing." But what I should've said was "April 9th" because that was the date I last saw Inward Eye perform, when they opened for Thornley. Before that? March 12th when I saw them perform during Canadian Music Week. read more (44 words)

Pete's NXNE '09 Picks

16-Jun-2009 03:00 AM Contributed by: pete Music News

Here it is, the week of NXNE, where Toronto is host to an amazing variety of independent music and music-related films from both Canada and abroad. I've been trying to find time to do some rough planning, but still haven't figured out where I'm going to end up. Despite that, here are picks that I hope provide you with enough incentive to get out and see some great independent music. read more (497 words)
