Tuesday April 21st was a crazy night in Toronto. Kings Of Leon were playing a sold out show at the Air Canada Centre (a very well deserved step-up for them from their previous two shows at the Koolhaus, one in November 2008 and one in June 2007), Flight Of The Conchords were doing their thing at Massy Hall, and The Horseshoe had The Appleseed Cast and An Horse lined-up. But happily, I ended up with The Presidents Of The United States Of America (PUSA) at Lee's Palace, a band I've been a fan of for 14 years now, not an insignificant portion of my life. read more (569 words)

Jami Lefebvre Is Making Something Right

Here's a song that's been in my collection for two years now that my iTunes decided to play for me on Sunday. The way I ended up with this track is unique: In August 2007, I was up North at a friend's cottage in the fairly remote town of Restoule, Ontario. It had been a great day that included beers down at the dock and lots of wine with dinner. At night, we could hear a party going on down the lake a bit, so a few of us went to check it out. read more (211 words)

Taking spot #5 in my Top 10 Albums of 2008 was Draw A Distance. Draw A Border., an album by The Details that I also wrote up as Pete's Pick in April 2008. I've been trying to get out to photograph this band for almost exactly one year now; since they're based in Winnipeg, they only play in Toronto every now and then, and those dates just haven't fit in with my schedule yet. This night was hosted by Manitoba Music, and showcased the talents of three Manitoba-based bands: The Details, Tele, and Oldfolks Home - all bands that share home with The Weakerthans and Inward Eye, among others. read more (546 words)

Three Free Songs for a Sunny Friday

18-Apr-2009 01:30 AM Contributed by: pete Music News

I don't know, maybe all the warm weather and sunshine today affected my mood, but I just felt like sharing. So I sifted through my inbox and found three songs that I thought were appropriate. The bands are from Florida, Pittsburgh, and somehwere in Texas, respectively. Download, listen, and if you like the songs, spread the word. read more (134 words)

Just in case you haven't noticed, I like going to shows, and sometimes the social atmosphere of the independent Toronto music scene can put me in a good mood for days. Especially when the performers are genuine about their craft and are on stage only because they want to share their passion. When it comes to The Paint Movement, not only do they want to share their music, they want to share the experience of making music, which may explain why so many of their friends joined them on stage for a song or two. The gathering was to celebrate the release of their full-length album Our Eurythmy. Add in sets by Fox Jaws, Make Your Exit, and Provincial Parks, and you've got a night full of people who just love to make music. read more (784 words)

Last December, I got out to The Horseshoe to see Thornley and was a little surprised with how much of a good time I had there. That concert was just a few days ahead of the release of his new single Make Believe to radio, and two months prior to the release of his second solo album Tiny Pictures. read more (419 words)

The Weakerthans and the Constantines on the same night? In the same venue? It was a pairing I wasn't expecting, mostly because I suspect that either one of these bands could sell out the Phoenix on their own, so being given the opportunity to see both on the same night for the price of a single ticket seemed genius. And it pretty much was, which explains why they had to add two additional shows after the first show sold out, making three nights in a row. read more (562 words)

With everyone in the music industry sleeping in from a late Saturday night out, and then preparing for the Junos, Sunday at The Artist Sanctuary was quite a bit slower. We still had a fair number of people drop by, including Monika Deol, the incredibly cute Nina Dobrev and Kayla Ewell, and bands Beast, The Trews (who put on a great performance at the Granville St. tent on Friday night), Protest The Hero, Hey Ocean!, and the Arkells. And through it all, we all had a great time closing up the place while BlondTron & Kay (pictured above) helped us keep the mood going right to the end. read more (132 words)

As The Artist Sanctuary started to come to a close for the day, people started to make plans for the evening. During the afternoon Aaron Douglas (Battlestar Galactica) and I had spent some time talking about music, and we decided to meet up at The Roxy to catch a band called The Dudes and then the Arkells. The Dudes were on a recommendation from a friend of Aaron's and (just in case you haven't noticed yet) I sort of enjoy getting out to see the Arkells every now and then, so it seemed like a good combination. read more (588 words)

Saturday at The Artist Sanctuary was a wild day. There were people coming through all day, but starting around 2 PM, the place really filled up and everyone seemed to be having a great time. Russell Peters made his way through the party, stopping at the DJ table to scratch. Ed Robertson and Tyler Stewart from the Barenaked Ladies were there, as was George Stroumboulopoulos. Lights, who won the Juno for New Artist Of The Year, stopped in with her manager Jian Ghomeshi. Luke Doucet & Melissa McClelland, Cancer Bats, Moneen, Matt & Jill Barber, Ron Sexsmith, Marianas Trench, and many more musicians also dropped in. Josie Dye, one of my favourite Toronto DJs (from 102.1) showed up, as well a few TV stars including Aaron Douglas and Kandyse McClure (Chief and Dee from Battlestar Galactica) and the cast from the upcoming Stargate Universe. read more (122 words)
