Music Blogging and Sticky Magazine

28-Mar-2010 10:00 pm Contributed by: pete Concert Photos

When I started Sticky Magazine, I knew that it would take up a lot of my time, but my plan was to continue to update this blog regulary with a combination of music and photography entries. That is still my plan — I am hoping to produce articles about concert photography, provide some insight into the portraits I shoot for the 52TO project, share some of my other photography, and even include music content here that I don't publish on Sticky Magazine. read more (163 words)

There's often a discrepancy between expectations and reality. In some cases, the discrepancy can cause disappointment and in others it can result in satisfaction. At Gentlemen Husbands, I got most what I expected, and a little that I didn't. read more (25 words)

I was a little surprised to see that two amazing indie rock bands, We Are The Take and Inward Eye, were going to be opening for Down With Webster. In some ways it makes sense, since Down With Webster incorporates some serious rock into their visually hip-hop based show, but I just wasn't sure that the two opening bands would appeal to the Down With Webster audience as well as they appeal to me. But looking around, it was clear I wasn't the only one in the audience that was a fan of all three bands. read more (398 words)

I should let you know that I'm relatively indifferent toward The Balconies' self-titled album. It's not that I don't want to listen to it, but there's something about the sound that makes it only good in small doses. However, it turns out there is something about their live performance that just didn't transfer to the recording. It's a combination of stage energy, the brighter sound of a live performance, and bags of charisma. It helps explain why The Balconies have received quite a lot of blogger love, both back when they were living in Ottawa, and now with their recent relocation to Toronto. read more (168 words)

Just about the time I started putting together my list of Top 50 Albums Of The Decade, I found out that Hollerado was going to be playing Bookie's Nu Music Nite at the Horseshoe Tavern. I missed them the last time they were in Toronto, and since then they've won the $250,000 Big Money Shot contest, and subsequently did a tour through China. In fact, they played a gig in Hong Kong on December 20th, and still somehow managed to get to the Horseshoe on time on December 22nd for Bookie's Annual Holiday Bash. It was after I discovered Hollerado was playing that I found out the night was going to be headlined by Arkells playing a set of Motown covers. Excellent combination! read more (648 words)

The Verge XM - Thank God It's Not Another Xmas Party (Photos)

24-Dec-2009 02:30 pm Contributed by: pete Concert Photos

For the second year in a row, I headed out to The Verge XM holiday party. Last year was a pretty wild party at the Tattoo Rock Parlour with Moneen headlining, and this year was similar in many ways, but instead took place across the road at the Velvet Underground. I don't have XM radio, but I recently signed up for a 14-day trial because they have recently released an iPhone application that allows you to stream XM to your phone, no satellite receiver needed. Very cool. There are about 2 or 3 stations I've been listening to, but The Verge is by far the one I listen to most. They play all Canadian bands and the rotation is excellent. The line-up for Thank God It's Not Another Xmas Party was a good representation of the station content: Dinosaur Bones, Still Life Still, Meligrove Band, and The Junction. read more (153 words)

It was a strange feeling waking up Sunday morning after the incredible show Weezer put on the night before, pretty much still buzzing from the concert, to find out that Rivers Cuomo (vocals, guitar) had been a part of a tour bus accident en route from Toronto to Boston. At first, the reports made the injuries sound minor, but then when a blog post on the Weezer MySpace page showed up, with photos included, it looked and sounded more serious. Another post let us know that Rivers sufferred internal injuries (that now appear to be healing well), along with with a hurt right leg. However, Rivers' right leg wasn't actually hurt during the accident, it turns out it was hurt during the performance at Toronto's Air Canada Centre during his Lady Gaga impression in the stands... but let me go back to the beginning. read more (875 words)

The 2009 CASBY Awards at Koolhaus, Toronto (Photos)

29-Oct-2009 07:40 pm Contributed by: pete Concert Photos

The CASBY Awards night is one of the big events of the year for the staff of 102.1. As compared to other awards shows I can sometimes be found at, The CASBY Awards is a bigger event, taking place at the Koolhaus with a capacity of about 2500 people. Two stages are run, with the main stage being used for full band performances, and the smaller side stage for solo (or near-solo) performances as well as handing out the awards. The line-up this year was pretty spectacular: illScarlett, Matthew Good, Mother Mother, Jay Malinowski (of Bedouin Soundclash), Arkells, The Stills, and a headlining performance by Metric. read more (243 words)

After the Silversun Pickups show, I made my way up to the Horseshoe Tavern to catch a local indie rock band called The Ghost Is Dancing. The band has been together over 5 years now, and have released two full-length albums, The Darkest Spark (2007) and Battles On (2009). I hadn't heard either album, but I did see some reviews of The Darkest Spark over a year ago that made some comparisons to other well known Canadian bands with lots of members. But that's not why I went; I went because the band promised that they would wash my bike or hang out with my foreign friend (among many other options) in their Facebook invitation. read more (194 words)
