After Edgefest Eve, I dropped my car off and grabbed the TTC to the Rancho Relaxo to meet up with some friends, including one buddy who was in town from Vancouver. The idea was to hang out with my friends, have a few drinks, and enjoy the last band of the evening. It went mostly according to plan, with one major variance that was mostly due to Facebook. read more (185 words)

Back Lot BBQ

Itís Saturday afternoon, with the threat of bad weather behind us and full line up of Six Shooter Records talent ahead, the crowds gathered for the annual back lot BBQ. The stage was set; 12 bands, 4 hours, a BBQ, and loads of beer. It was definitely going to be a hot Saturday afternoon in more ways then just the weather. read more (49 words)

What is a Snorri, and why does it need a fundraiser? As it turns out, Snorri is actually a student exchange program for young people of Icelandic origin, and so the funds collected from this night are going toward the program. In a way it made sense that I ended up at this event, not because I'm or Icelandic origin or anything, but because I've had a lifelong obsession with the idea of travelling to Iceland that started back when I was a kid and liked to look at maps. Aside from not being Icelandic in anyway, I also fall (way) outside of the exchange program's definition of "young", so I'm really not at all eligible, but at least for this night I was able to imagine the sights of Reykjavik while listening to some Canadian music played by bands with some sort of Icelandic connection. The evening featured Sigrun Stella, Lindy (of Major Maker), Infighter, and Mackenzie Kristjón. read more (143 words)

Vesta Varro was back in Ontario recently, here to play at the Rogers Spring Music Festival in Hamilton, and they also managed to fit in a couple of shows in Toronto. I joined them at The Hideout, a small venue that I've never been to before, and the mood was decidedly... um... drunk. read more (131 words)

Sum 41 has been around since about 1996, but they appear to still be going strong drawing a similar type of fan they did 7 years ago with their hit album All Killer No Filler. This concert was in support of their latest album, Underclass Hero, that was released in July last year. This high-energy outfit knows how to play to a crowd, with lots of great poses and pop-punk antics. During the first song on stage, Deryck Whibley (vocals, guitar) pulled a few lucky fans from the crowd to watch from side-stage, while the band poured out a few well-loved tunes. read more (7 words)

Megan Hamilton writes sort of mellow indie-folk, and while strumming her acoustic guitar, she performs her songs with fairly heavy reverb in the vocals that creates a kind of mood that is reminiscent of female vocalists of the distant past. The Volunteer Canola is her backing band that generally adds the moody backgrounds, but in more than one of the songs the provided a few nice highlights. read more (6 words)

I know I already photographed We Are The Take just 20 days ago, but there are a few songs I really liked so I thought I may as well head out to The Horseshoe on Tuesday for another set. I'm getting to know a few of their songs now, and the more I hear the music, the more I like it. Aside from Dreams and Montreal Love Song, there's this other song called 1886 that got me going. I'm not sure when they're playing in Toronto next, but it looks like they're heading up to Montreal for a show on February 15th. read more (67 words)
