I'm really starting to enjoy these Two Way Monologues showcase evenings organized by Dan Wolovick. This is my third time out to one of these nights and the combination of both new and experienced talent with cheap beer just works well. The fact that Rancho Relaxo was filled to capacity this time didn't hurt either. But there's always a musical surprise in store because the bands aren't always what I expect them to be, and this time around the surprise was Mark Berube. read more (132 words)

You might recognize Cherise Burda as a guitarist from Noah's Arkweld, a band I caught at both NXNE and Virgin Festival earlier this year. THe WitHouts is Cherise's band, together with Jason Darby on drums (who also plays with Noah's Arkweld), Kate Harrison on bass (also plays with local band Fidget), and Victor Pwu on guitar. Cherise's candy-coated vocals fronted their set of power-pop tunes. read more (7 words)

Revival Dear recently finished recording their debut self-titled album on the new independent label U Spin Records, and now the album is available from them online, at a couple of records stores in Toronto, and through eMusic.com. I've seen this band quite a few times due partly to the fact that my good friend is their band manager and owner of U Spin Records, but that's really not the only reason I go back to see them. They are a howl on stage; they play with full passion for the music, and every time I see them I have a great time. I had an absolute blast when I went to see them at The Dakota back in June, a venue that is perfectly suited for their style of country-rock, and it was very cool to see them play their first theatre performance at The River Run Centre in Guelph. read more (50 words)

Sunday nights can sometimes be a difficult night to get out and see bands, but what can make it even harder is multiple nights of sleep depravation beforehand. I still made it out, but it means that whatever happened in my head while watching The New Pornographers on stage shouldn't be trusted. I will say that there were some brief moments of amusing banter between A.C. Newman and the crowd, as well as with Dan Bejar, who would occasionally appear on stage with a fresh beer in hand. But I'll leave the rest of the review up to some other, very decent sources. read more (63 words)

I don't know much about Meligrove Band except that I love the two tracks Feversleep and You're Alive off their 2006 album Planets Conspire. Feversleep is an instrumental piece, and You're Alive is happy indie-pop. So after the Marianas Trench show, I headed over to Sneaky Dee's to catch their show. Sneaky Dee's usually runs their bands later at night, which meant I managed to get there in time to see Team Robosphere, a fairly insane band out of Brooklyn. read more (181 words)

With all four members set across the front of the stage, including the drummer placed far stage-left, the setup for Grizzly Bear at The Mod Club last Thursday was definitely unique. The band performed a number of songs off their latest CD Yellow House, including an extended version of the song Colorado. The set was filled with brooding sounds and lighting to match. Chris Taylor is something to watch, as he is responsible for not only the bass, clarinet, and flute, but also for the huge mess of wires and distortion pedals (see full photo set) that he uses to transform the instruments into atmospheric background sounds. read more (6 words)

I had no idea that concerts took place at Playdium, but apparently Supernova has a deal that allows them to hold day-long outdoor concerts there, in the grassy area next to the go-carts that can hold a good-size crowd. This was a daytime event that showcased approximately 15 bands, closing the day with the Cancer Bats, a local hardcore punk band lead by Liam Cormier who sings about killing zombies and probably a bunch of other topics (I was unable to make out the words). read more (75 words)

Ah, the Kings Of Leon. Here in Toronto to promote their latest album Because Of The Times. Or were they? With a set list that included a number of tunes from their first album, including Trani, perhaps they were just here to play to their fans. I had expected the crowd to be about half on-lookers - people who have heard one or two songs, but never really got into them. That wasn't the case. The Koolhaus was filled with fans who knew all the words, even at the back of the venue. The songs that they did play off the new album were excellent choices. It took them a few songs to warm up, but once they got going, it was the kind of show I was hoping for. read more (9 words)

Back in April, Emm Gryner played a short lunchtime concert at the waterfall stage in the First Canadian Place office tower to help promote her latest album, The Summer of High Hopes. I took a short break from my day job to get out and take a few photos. As I've mentioned, there is an ancient proverb that says, roughly translated: You can never have too many photographs of Emm Gryner. Too right. read more (1 words)

Sometimes a Sunday night full of metal is what I need. It was heavy, it was loud, and it was a little sweaty. It put me in the right frame of mind for Monday.
