Last Thursday night with Plants and Animals and Ruby Coast was one of the best shows I've been to this year so far. Plants and Animals calls Montreal home, but kicked off their North American tour playing to a sold-out crowd at The Horseshoe in Toronto. They are a group of three amazingly skilled musicians that genuinely enjoy being on stage and that translates to a group of fans that genuinely enjoy being in the audience. And with Ruby Coast opening the night, it all fell into place just right. read more (411 words)

I've seen Dinosaur Bones a few times, and I like watching the progress they are making, so when they were added to the bill with Amos The Transparent, the two of them together seemed like a good reason to get out to the Tattoo Rock Parlour one more time. read more (327 words)

I made an attempt to see Bedouin Soundclash upstairs at the El Mocambo during NXNE, and even managed to get myself close to the stage. But the place was packed beyond belief, the air was thick with sweat, and some of the stage lights weren't working. I didn't even bother to mention this in my NXNE 2008 Friday article because I didn't take any photos and only stuck around for the first song. I left deciding that I would get out to see Bedouin Soundclash under different conditions. It took a little longer than I had planned, but last Friday at the Sound Academy was it. read more (312 words)

A two day festival, in four parts. This is part four: Sunday Evening.

After the Arkells and a small amount of socializing, I headed back to the main stage. Although I didn't realize it at the time, the rest of the day was going to be more about having a good time than musically invigorating. I was looking forward to The Pigeon Detectives despite not really knowing much about them and I hadn't seen Silversun Pickups since 2007. So there were a few things I wanted to get to, but I wasn't really excited by the main stage headliners, so my plan was just take it easy and let the evening take me where it wanted. read more (1,016 words)

A two day festival, in four parts. This is part three: Sunday Afternoon.

When I woke up Sunday morning it was raining. Not pouring, just raining at a consistent pace. I could've let it delay me again, and it did slightly, but only because I had to gather together some rain/mud appropriate attire. I still managed to get over to the island well before the music started. I'm glad I worked it out because the rain didn't last all that long, and had I not got there early I would've missed Paper Lions, a band that turned out to be the big surprise of V-Fest for me. read more (490 words)

A two day festival, in four parts. This is part two: Saturday Evening.

After photographing three songs of Shudder To Think and then standing in the audience listening to a few songs, I realized I better head over to the main stage for the Constantines photo call. Just as I broke free of the TD Music Stage sound barrier, I could hear the thunder of bass coming across the island indicating that the Constantines were already on stage. Ahead of schedule. So I picked up the pace, and managed to get there before the first song ended. read more (827 words)

A two day festival, in four parts. This is part one: Saturday Afternoon.

Virgin Festival in Toronto takes place on Toronto Island Park, which is really two separate islands, with the main Virgin Mobile Stage setup on Olympic Island and the two other stages, the TD Music Stage and the Oh Henry! Stage on Centre Island.

This was the third Virgin Festival in Toronto, and my third time attending, although each year I've attended in a different capacity. In 2006, I was a ticket-holding fan-boy that went with friends, took a few photos with my point and shoot, and had a great time. In 2007, I sold my son out for an all-access pass, saw very few bands, but had a great time. This year, I went as media, effectively alone but ran into lots of people I knew, photographed 19 bands, was treated brilliantly by Virgin, and... absolutely had a great time. read more (752 words)

I downloaded the latest Ra Ra Riot album, The Rhumb Line, from eMusic.com a few weeks ago, but only got around to listening to it two days before their show in Toronto – after a Facebook friend reminded me they were going to be playing The Horseshoe. Although the album didn't completely blow me away on the first listen, it definitely made enough of an impression on me to get me out to their show. And on a night when there were many other options: Crystal Castles headlined the Vice Festival Ball, Edwin (formerly of I Mother Earth) rocked the Tattoo, Revival Dear were playing with new drummer Robbie Butcher at the El Mocambo, the No Shame showcase at Rancho Relaxo, and even The Kids In The Hall were doing a 25th anniversary show at The Rivoli. read more (331 words)

It was Akira Alemany (vocals, guitar) from Modernboys Moderngirls who let me know they were putting together a night at The Horseshoe and were going to be playing with Oh No Forest Fires and Dinosaur Bones, two bands that I've seen before and will very happily see again (even more so now, see below). Also on the bill was Everything All The Time, a band which I knew nothing about, except that I liked their name. read more (367 words)

When I found out Semi Precious Weapons were playing an event called CraveFest, the first thing I did was Google the term and discovered that CraveFest is actually an online international videos awards festival. The whole thing culminates in an awards ceremony that appears to be held mid-August every year. This year was the 2nd awards ceremony and was hosted by Korey Schaefer and Tanya Blake, and included performances by Amos The Transparent, Webster Death, Hexes & Ohs, The Flatliners, and Semi Precious Weapons. read more (571 words)
