Barrie-based Fox Jaws often plays in the Toronto area, and as a result I've managed to see them more than a couple of times just because they were playing on the same bill as bands I went out to see. However, the last two times I've seen them, the band has managed to get inside my brain, in a good way, with one of their new songs. With all the new material being released on their new album, At Odds, the CD release party seemed like a good event for me to head out with the sole intention of seeing Fox Jaws. read more (315 words)

Executing near perfectly, The Decemberists put on the kind of show that brought about a musical brain-rush that I can only get from something incredible. The concert was in support of their latest album, The Hazards Of Love, an album that has become one of favorite releases of 2009. As a result, their appearance at the Koolhaus in Toronto was one of my most anticipated events of the year. read more (561 words)

Celebrating the release of their debut full-length album, The Rural Alberta Advantage managed fill the Horseshoe Tavern to capacity. They are one of those bands I've heard a lot about, mostly from other bloggers and music podcasts, but hadn't yet managed to experience their show. In my experience, CD release parties are generally the best time see a band for the first time. read more (340 words)

When the Horseshoe is completely sold-out, the place becomes pretty hot and sweaty, but there's something about having that many people packed into the venue that puts the crowd into a distinctive mood. It didn't hurt that Frightened Rabbit is an incredibly sincere band and that a good portion of people there knew every song, but I'm talking about something beyond that... maybe there's something in the air there. read more (327 words)

One great satisfaction is when I go see a band just because I sort of like a few of their songs, and they completely surprise me with an awesome set. It was Tuesday (always free at The Horseshoe) and Library Voices were scheduled to play, along with Arietta and Black Diamond Bay. Library Voices have been on my list of bands to go see since February of this year, which is when I acquired their current EP entitled Hunting Ghosts. But that was months ago and this particular night rolled up on me so quickly that I hadn't listened to their EP since then. I couldn't even remember what their music sounded like, but I'm glad I got my night sorted out because... yes, they were definitely one of the better independent bands I've seen this year. read more (481 words)

It was at the Death Cab For Cutie show at the Sound Academy in April that I ran into the members of the Arkells, and I remember saying to one of them "When you're headlining here, I want to be on stage with you, photographing the show", and there was some agreement we would do that. I really had no idea that day would come just three months later, with the Arkells headlining a Friday night show with nearly 2,000 people in attendance. read more (549 words)

I started Thursday of NXNE '09 with Zeus and ended up seeing a total of eight bands play that same night. Even though sometimes the first set of the night can fade in my memory, Zeus stood out in their own way among a night of great performances. For the month July, Zeus is doing a Wednesday night residency at The Dakota Tavern - I missed the first one on July 1st, but when July 8th rolled around I was looking to get out and photograph and band, and Zeus was it. read more (460 words)

Even if you have seen the business cards I hand out sometimes, what you might not know is that the image I use on the front of the card is of Nic Cester (vocals, guitar) from JET. Their 2003 album Get Born was played heavily in my household, and even though their second album Shine On was met with some hilariously nasty reviews (I'm looking at you, Pitchfork), I thought it was a pretty decent follow-up. Now with their third studio album set to be released August 25th, JET set out for a pre-release tour. read more (204 words)

It was really only by chance that I ended up at the Theory Of A Deadman concert. As I mentioned in my Sunday article about The Artist Sanctuary, I noticed one of the guys from Theory Of A Deadman was wearing a shirt from The Parlor Mob, and when I spoke to him about it, I learned that The Parlor Mob were going to be opening the show on the upcoming Thursday. I've been listening to The Parlor Mob album regularly and love it, and I like a few of the hits from Theory Of A Deadman, so we made some on-the-spot arrangements. read more (526 words)
