NXNE '09 Friday Night (Photos and Reviews)

29-Jun-2009 03:30 AM Contributed by: pete Concert Reviews

As is almost always the case for me with festivals, I tend to be overly ambitious on the first night and then pare it back significantly for the next (and remaining) nights, and NXNE '09 was no exception. Despite my picks for Friday night, I decided to head to the El Mocambo to meet up with some friends and just stick there until late, at which point the plan was to move to Rancho Relaxo for a 3:00 AM set from Mark Berube and The Patriotic Few (he was excellent last time I saw him in January 2008). read more (611 words)

NXNE '09 Thursday Night - Pete's Adventures (Photos and Reviews)

27-Jun-2009 12:00 AM Contributed by: pete Concert Reviews

Although I posted Pete's NXNE '09 Picks, I didn't intend that to be my schedule. But for Thursday, I ended up following my picks list fairly closely, with some help from another photographer Sara Collaton who offered to meet up with me at Zeus and provide transportation to the other shows. And so with Sara, the two of us traveled between The Courthouse, the Rivoli, Rancho Relaxo, The Drake, and Clinton's, where she dropped me off and went on her way. But that wasn't the end of the night for me. read more (1,316 words)

Before I climbed onto the White Cowbell Oklahoma mobile party bus and got lost in the fun that was NXNE, I went out on a Tuesday to The Horseshoe to catch Jets Overhead, but also to see what The Last True Gentlemen were up to, and hear The Evelyn Room for the first time. Tuesdays are always free at The Horseshoe, thanks to Bookie from 102.1, so it's always a good night to hang out and snap some photos. read more (549 words)

I had so many different options for the night of June 4th, it was almost like being out at a restaurant and wanting to order everything on the menu. But when the wait staff finally showed up and asked for my order, I suddenly knew what I wanted; I decided on an appetizer of Revival Dear at the Rivoli, followed by a main course of Inward Eye at the Tattoo Rock Parlour (which will be the next article). read more (220 words)

I wasn't planning on going out on Wednesday night, so I didn't really look around to see what was on. But around 5pm that night I checked my Facebook and saw a status update talking about the line-up at the Bovine Sex Club that night: The Reason, Songs From A Room, and Amos The Transparent. It had been almost two weeks since I had seen Amos The Transparent and was suffering from withdrawal, and was in the mood to hear some Songs From A Room. I hadn't seen The Reason before, but had heard good things from multiple sources. So no, I wasn't planning on being out, but next thing you know, I was at the Bovine. read more (536 words)

There have been some good shows this month, but the show I was looking forward to the most was Amos The Transparent at The Horseshoe, especially after seeing them play an incredible set during Canadian Music Week at the Rancho Relaxo. read more (337 words)

When it comes to movies, I'm pretty good at avoiding spoilers. I don't really pay attention to reviews, at least not reviews that give away the story. But when it comes to music, I spend a fair amount of time listening to CDs, investigating bands, reading reviews, and spending time out at concerts. But somehow I managed to accidentally avoid images or reviews of Blue October before going to their show, and although I didn't know what to expect, it wasn't what happened. read more (242 words)

Having just recently signed a deal with Universal Motown Records, Down With Webster, who have been pumping out a stream of new demo songs, held a celebratory concert at The Opera House. A balcony full of business related people were there to see the band in action, but like any good show, it's not just about the band, it's about how the band and the fans work together to create a good time. read more (285 words)

When I first started photographing bands, I went out to see a band called Bend Sinister (who I saw again recently), but before they took the stage, a band called Pride Tiger played, making them the very first band I photographed. They were one of those good surprises. Pair them with local producer and hard rock legend Ian Blurton with his band C'mon on a Friday? Okay. read more (491 words)

Writing about The Dears is difficult only because there are too many things to say, and figuring out what to write and what to leave out isn't easy. In terms of band members, The Dears recently went through what keyboardist Natalia Yanchak has described as a "total mutiny", leaving only her and band leader Murray Lightburn as the constant. Despite this set back, they released their fourth full-length studio album, Missiles, in October 2008 to generally positive reviews. It is the album responsible for making me want to be a part of the show at The MOD Club on the last day of April. read more (685 words)
