Just to give you an idea of what kind of night it was at The Horseshoe last Friday: At the beginning of the night I asked two guys near the stage who they were there to see, and they responded with "Well, all of the bands". That's what you get when you put the Arkells together with The Waking Eyes for a rock and roll double-header, and then add We Are The Take to open the show. read more (762 words)

What does the "F-U" in the F-U Awards stand for? Strangely, that's not something that is clearly defined on their website. Perhaps it stands for "Forensic Unit"? Or maybe it is somehow related to "Franklin University" in Ohio? But the awards show was put on by Punk-o-rama, Underground Operations, and Monster Energy Drinks, so that can't be right. Oh. Ooooh. I see now... clearly, it stands for "Frequently Underestimated", and nothing else. The party was hosted by Jason Mewes (from Jay and Silent Bob) with co-hosts Barry Taylor and J.D. from 102.1 The Edge. It was a night of loud music, skateboarding demonstrations, and awards. read more (558 words)

Even though I don't get out to the Rancho Relaxo as often as I'd like, when I do go, it's good to see that the music community there continues to thrive. The place was packed front to back with lovers of independent music, including members of at least two additional bands that were not performing that night. It's the kind of environment that encourages bands like Windsor-based Michou to come play in Toronto, and helps bands like Make Your Exit transform from a group "with a few nice ideas" (as I previosuly wrote) into a surprisingly awesome indie-rock band. read more (294 words)

I caught Low Level Flight for the first time near the end of last July and have been watching for another opportunity to see them play again. With Low Level Flight on the same bill as We Are The Take and These Three Cities at the Tattoo Rock Parlour last Thursday, it made it a great night to get out. read more (411 words)

The venue upstairs at Sneaky Dee's showcases some of the more eccentric and experimental music you'll get to see in Toronto (if you disagree, please check out my photos from The Robot Ate Me), but last Friday was a much more regular night there with Modernboys Moderngirls, Fox Jaws, AfterpartY, and one of my current favourite independent bands Amos The Transparent. read more (625 words)

One thing I really like about the music community in Toronto is the support musicians give to each other. I will often see members of bands in the audience for other bands, supporting their friends or there just because music is their life. Before Woodward Company took the stage, I ran into Tim Oxford who plays drums for the Arkells. It turns out he was there because he is long-time friends with two of the members of Woodward Company, and was involved in the recording of their new, but not quite ready for release, EP. read more (234 words)

I'm 14 again, and I'm out in my backyard on a hot summer's day jumping on a trampoline with Back In Black blasting on the stereo through the back windows of my house. (Seriously, I did that.) Then I'm 25, and in the Harp pub in Wollongong, Australia with Dirty Deeds (Done Dirt Cheap) playing in the background, and a guy has me pinned and is trying to write a bad word on my forehead with permanent marker. I can't remember what I did to provoke that, but anyway... my friend steps in to stop him, and my forehead lives through another night [mostly] unscathed. read more (599 words)

Noah Mintz is possibly more well known for his CD mastering work with Lacquer Channel Mastering than he was with his previous band hHead. I don't mean that as a knock against hHead, what I'm saying is that if you check the liner notes of your CDs, you'll come across his name. Repeatedly. His credits include Broken Social Scene, Wintersleep, Die Mannequin, Constantines, Matt Mays & El Torpedo, Stars, The National, and on and on. As a result, he's very active in the music community, and so it was no surprise that the Supermarket was not only packed with friends but also many musicians when he held a CD release party for his new album, Names For Shapes That Don't Exist. read more (503 words)

Looking back at my website, it turns out that I started 2008 with a show by The Framework at The Horseshoe. And now, just a few weeks short of a year later, seemed like a good time to see them again. And with These Three Cities releasing a new EP the same night, it was definitely time to spend another night at the Tattoo Rock Parlour. read more (445 words)

I guess Dave Bookman from 102.1 decided to provide us a little holiday cheer this year by organizing a great line-up for the always free Tuesday Nu Music Nite at The Horseshoe. The night opened with Songs From A Room, a band I've been looking forward to seeing again, followed by Young Rival, then two of my favourite Canadian bands, the Arkells and We Are The Take. read more (752 words)
